Hi, I’m Niks. Valentine’s Day is the one holiday where kids color for somebody. Hardly anyone colors a valentine to keep it. So I sorted these Valentines Day coloring pages by who they’re for, not by theme. The whole set also comes as one PDF.

Who gets each Valentine’s Day page?

Any page here makes a lovely valentine, but each one fits a certain person best. I split all 22 into six groups, so a child can pick with someone in mind.

Our favorite Valentines Day coloring pages

Teddy Bear Hugging a Big Heart

A chubby teddy bear with a bow on one ear hugs a big patched heart on a round cushion. 34 spaces. If you print one page this February, make it this one.

Four Valentine Cards to Color

Four blank cards with scalloped edges: a big heart, a rose, a smiling bear face and a heart with an arrow. Color, cut, sign the back. Came for valentine cards to color? Start here.

Be Mine Lovebirds

BE MINE in bubble letters above four little lovebirds on and below a leafy branch. Kids give every bird its own color, then argue about which two are the couple.

Puppy Delivering Love Letters

A happy puppy with a mail bag and a heart envelope trots past a mailbox covered in hearts. My nephew colored the mailbox bright blue and called it “the love post office.” Nobody argued.

Baby Dinosaur with a Rose

A chubby baby dinosaur with heart spots holds a rose on a grassy patch. For the kid who thinks Valentine’s Day is a bit too pink.

Nine Valentine Sweets

A lollipop, a donut, a heart cookie, chocolates, a wrapped candy, an ice cream cone, a strawberry, a macaron and a cake slice, in three rows of three. 71 small spaces, all easy to cut around. It doubles as the menu for a pretend Valentine bakery.

Which valentine coloring page is right for your child?

Count the spaces, not the hearts. Every page is drawn in the same easy style, so a two-year-old wants a low number and a patient eight-year-old wants a high one.

Need Valentines Day coloring pages for preschool? The top two rows are the sweet spot.

Heart coloring pages in this set

Hearts show up on all 22 Valentines Day coloring pages, but four make them the star: Six Patterned Heart Candies, the Smiling Hearts Pattern, XOXO with Smiling Hearts and Teddy Bear Hugging a Big Heart. The Smiling Hearts Pattern alone has 35 hearts in seven rows of five.

My trick: color them like real candy hearts. One soft pastel per heart (pale pink, lavender, mint, lemon, peach), then a slightly darker pencil of the same color for the stripes or dots inside.

Valentines Day coloring pages for the class card exchange

The four cut-apart pages in the classmates row were made for the school card swap, and the three lettering pages fold in half into a card. One tip from experience: write names on the back in pencil before anyone colors. Once 24 identical candy hearts are cut out, nobody knows whose is whose.

How to color Valentines Day coloring pages: 5 tips

1. Use more than one red

One red all over looks flat. Pick a light pink, a hot pink, a true red and a berry purple: lighter ones on big shapes, darker ones on small hearts.

2. Make a big heart look puffy

Go darker along the heart’s edge and leave a small white curve near the top as a shine mark. Try it on the teddy’s heart and the bunny’s balloons.

3. Give bubble letters an ombre

Color BE MINE, XOXO or HUGS from light pink to deep red, one letter at a time.

4. Don’t forget the white animals

Penguin bellies, the unicorn and the bunny are white like the paper. Shade their edges pale gray or lavender and leave the middle bare.

5. Pick the right tool for each age

Chunky crayons for toddlers, colored pencils for the tiny stripes and dots, markers on cardstock for bold reds. Glitter glue goes on last, or it ends up on elbows, the table and probably the cat.

A little Valentine’s Day history to share while you color

Something to talk about while the crayons go round:

  1. Valentine’s Day falls on February 14 and is named after Saint Valentine, an early Christian saint from Roman times.
  2. Geoffrey Chaucer is often credited with the first written link between Valentine’s Day and romance, in a 1300s poem about birds choosing mates.
  3. In the 1800s, Esther Howland of Massachusetts sold lacy paper valentines and became known as the “Mother of the American Valentine.”
  4. Candy hearts with printed words date back to the 1860s, when Daniel Chase built a machine that printed messages onto candy.
  5. Cupid is the Roman god of love. Greek myths call him Eros.
  6. Real lovebirds are small parrots from Africa.

Valentine’s Day classroom and party ideas

Last February I set a stack of these next to the snacks at a class party. The cupcakes lasted ten minutes. The coloring lasted an hour, because every kid wanted to make one for the kid next to them.

  • Valentine match-up. Kids decide who each page is for (classmate, friend, family or teacher) and say why.
  • Valentine vocabulary. Find and label the cupid, macaron, envelope, mailbox and wreath.
  • Counting practice. Count the 35 hearts on the Smiling Hearts Pattern by fives, one row at a time.
  • Story sequence. Line up Four Valentine Cards to Color, Puppy Delivering Love Letters and Two Penguins Sharing a Heart: a card gets made, delivered and shared.
  • A valentine coloring book. Staple the all-pages PDF and let each child draw a heart on the cover.

Printing for a whole class? The free classroom license covers it in plain words.

Printing tips for the best results

  • One file, one click. The all-pages PDF is a free printable Valentine coloring book with all 22 pages.
  • Black and white is plenty. Choose “Fit to page.” The pages are US Letter and fit A4 too.
  • Cardstock for anything you’ll give away. Markers won’t soak through, and the card stands up on a desk.

How I made and checked these pages

All 22 designs are original to ColorTheDay, and I went through each one before it went live: bold, closed outlines, shapes a preschooler can handle, a title that matches what’s drawn. Three pages failed (one spelled a word wrong, two were too messy), so they’re not here. The “who it’s for” groups are my own call, and the “spaces to color” numbers are counted, not guessed.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Valentines Day coloring pages free?

Yes, all 22 Valentines Day coloring pages are free to download and print, with no account and no email. Print as many as your family, class or party needs. Please don’t sell them or upload the files to another website. Sending a friend the link is more than fine.

Which valentine coloring pages are best for toddlers?

The ones with the fewest spaces to color. The Kawaii Cupcake with a Heart and Hugs Hedgehogs have 14 spaces each, and Two Penguins Sharing a Heart has 18. They’re big, friendly shapes with thick outlines, so a two-year-old with a chunky crayon can fill them without frustration.

Which Valentine’s Day pages suit older kids or a class party?

The cut-apart sheets keep a group busy longest: Four Valentine Cards to Color, Six Patterned Heart Candies, Nine Valentine Sweets and Valentine’s Day Doodles. Older kids also like the Roses and Hearts Pattern (85 spaces) and the three lettering pages, BE MINE, XOXO and HUGS, which fold into cards.

Can I print all the pages as one Valentine coloring book?

Yes. Tap “Download all 22 pages” and you get one PDF with every outline. Staple the left edge and you have a homemade coloring book, a sweet party favor for the price of some paper.

Can teachers print these valentine coloring sheets for a whole class?

Yes, please do. A copy for every student, a few extras for early finishers, a stack for the homeschool co-op: all free. The only things I ask are no reselling and no posting the PDFs on other sites. The license page has the details if your school wants them in writing.

How to print Valentines Day coloring pages?

Tap “Download PDF” under any page, or “Download all 22 pages” for the full set. Open the file, choose Print and pick “Fit to page” or 100%. Every PDF is US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) and prints fine on A4. They’re black outlines on white, so black-and-white printing works.

What colors go best on Valentine’s Day coloring pages?

Red, pink and white are the classic Valentine’s Day colors, with purple close behind. For candy hearts and cupcakes, soft pastels like lavender, peach, mint and lemon look just like real sweets. Mixing two or three pinks with one red keeps a page from looking flat.
