Coloring tips for realistic (or rainbow!) horses

Pick a real horse color. Horses come in lots of beautiful coat colors. Here are a few to try:

Coat colorHow to color it
BayWarm brown body, black mane, tail and lower legs
ChestnutReddish-brown all over, with a mane the same color or a little lighter
PalominoGolden-yellow body with a cream or white mane and tail
GrayLight gray body with darker gray shading on the legs and face
PintoLarge patches of white plus brown or black
AppaloosaLight body covered in small dark spots, especially on the rump

Add movement to the mane. Color the mane and tail in long strokes that follow the direction of the hair. Use a darker shade underneath and a lighter shade on top to make it look shiny.

Don’t forget the details. Hooves are usually dark gray or black. The nose and muzzle are often a little darker than the face. Add a tiny white dot in each eye to make your horse look alive.

Go fantasy. Who says horses have to be brown? Try a rainbow mane, a pastel purple coat or galaxy-blue spots. The flower-crown portrait looks amazing with bright roses against a soft-colored horse.

Use the right tools:

  • Crayons for younger kids and big areas like the meadow and sky.
  • Colored pencils for the detailed mane on the flower-crown portrait.
  • Markers for bold, bright colors. Place a spare sheet underneath in case of bleed-through.

Fun horse facts to share while you color

  1. Horses can sleep standing up. A special system in their legs lets them lock their joints and doze without falling over. They lie down for deep sleep, though.
  2. Baby horses are called foals, and most can stand and walk within a couple of hours of being born.
  3. Horses have some of the biggest eyes of any land mammal, and with eyes on the sides of their head they can see almost all the way around them.
  4. Horse height is measured in “hands.” One hand equals 4 inches (about 10 cm), measured from the ground to the top of the shoulders.
  5. Horses breathe only through their noses. Unlike people, they can’t breathe through their mouths.

Activity ideas for parents and teachers

  • Name your horse. After coloring, give your horse a name, an age and a favorite snack (apples? carrots?) and write them under the picture.
  • Coat color matching. Use the coat color chart above and challenge kids to color each horse as a different real-world breed or color.
  • Story sequence. Line up the pages to tell a story: a foal is born, grows up in the stable, gallops in the meadow and finally wins a jumping show.
  • Horse camp activity. Riding schools and camps can use these pages for quiet time between lessons, with a horse-fact quiz at the end.
  • Fine-motor practice. The flower-crown portrait is a great calm activity for older kids and adults who enjoy mindful coloring.

Printing tips for the best results

  • Print at 100% or “Fit to page” on US Letter or A4 paper.
  • Use black-and-white printing. The pages are pure black line art, so you won’t waste color ink.
  • Choose heavier paper (24-32 lb or light cardstock) for markers or watercolor pencils.
  • Grab the full set with the “Download all pages” button for a ready-made horse activity pack.
